Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh

Costume design

Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh studied fashion at the Limerick School of Art and Design and also completed an MA in Design History and Material Culture in the National College of Art and Design.

She started working on films in the early 1990s as a trainee and wardrobe go for in various costume departments on films including The Secret of Roan Inish and Widow’s Peak and progressed to assistant costume designer, working with Joan Bergin on Michael Winterbottom’s Family, Marit Allen on Scarlett and then with Sandy Powell on Michael Collins and The Butcher Boy. Working this way, a form of old fashioned apprenticeship, is a great way to learn the craft. Joan, Marit and Sandy were each fantastic, kind and generous and Eimer learned an awful lot from them about being a costume designer, much of which involves trouble shooting and knowing how to deal with people, people in this case being actors, directors, crew etc.

After this apprenticeship, Eimer began to work as a costume designer in her own right. Over the years, she has worked with directors such as Gerry Stembridge, Jim Sheridan, Neil Jordan and Ken Loach and with actors from Stephen Rea to Emma Thompson and with many amazing crews.

Eimer has also designed costumes for theatre productions in the Gate and the Abbey and has collaborated quite a bit with Rough Magic Theatre Company over the years. In 2010, being acutely aware of the lack of formal training in Ireland, she joined the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) to help kick start the third level Honours Design for Stage and Screen course. She enjoyed lecturing, but although the National Film School has its home at IADT, the college found it impossible to support her professional career. After four years at IADT, Eimer left and has recently finished designing the costumes for Whit Stillman’s new film, Love and Friendship.

Eimer is represented by Sue Greenleaves and Vanessa Jones at Independent Talent.
