Artist Statement

Designing the costumes for the Tiny Plays presented two opposing challenges. On the one hand, because there were 25 different plays, it was critical that the shows ran together, without big pauses for costume changes; on the other hand, it was vitally important that the costumes supported the story and told the audience something about the character, because every play was so brief.

The design process revolved around collaborating with Sabine Dargent (set designer), Jim Culleton (director), Val Sherlock (hair and make up design) and all 5 actors. I devised a grid system of illustrating the costumes, so the actors could not only visualise their costume, but they could see themselves with the other actors in the context of that play, as well as being able to see where they had just come from and where they were off to next. A bit like an excel spread sheet, with pictures! It was very gratifying to see them each use this during the tech to plot their changes and track their progress.
